Three French Hens tote bag

This was a really quick and easy project from my Finish Along 3rd Quarter goals, perfect for a snowy winter late afternoon/evening inside by the fire.

I adapted the free Pocket Tote pattern from Make It Coats - I used five fat quarters and some yardage of a blue gingham and a red solid - it took a little bit of extra maths but still came together quickly.

The feature fabric is a mash-up of lovely illustrations and graphics based on the song 'The Twelve Days of Christmas' and I love the three French hens that are shown (perhaps due to having a little collection of hens out in the backyard!)

The outside of the bag has pockets and it measures about 10" x 12" so is a nice size without being too bulky. I used dark aqua for the inner lining, and an aqua gingham for the pocket linings. The contrast fabric on the exterior is a deep grey colour that looks almost like a dark chocolate from some angles.

My dear Aunty Blanche had asked me to make a bag for her friend, so I have actually made nine bags for her to choose from (see the next posts to see the other bags) - my Aunt chose this bag for herself after Isabelle chose the one she wanted.

Huge "hello" to my quilting friends visiting via Kelly's Needle and Thread Thursday!

  1. Love that fabric. It will be so much fun to use it -- year round. But especially fun at Christmas no doubt. So, reading your info it says you're a southern girl... Is that southern as in USA - south or perhaps New Zealand southern. Which then makes me think what NZ southern might be! I must say that the snow looks good to me... enough to look snowy but not enough to mean no one can get out and about. It's definitely hot on the east coast of USA.

    1. Hi Bonnie, yes am a southern girl from Southland in New Zealand, about a 90-120 minute drive from where a lot of scenes were filmed for the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies. We often feel the Antarctic chill here in winter, and it's ertainly not as hot as you're getting in the States this summer! That dusting of snow has been it for us so far - other parts of the South Island slightly further north from us have had some dumpings -good for the ski fields around Queenstown! Keep cool, have a good weekend.

  2. Very cute! I love your fabric choices. And it is awesome seeing snow in the background of your picture. It's been 100 degrees here all week.

    1. We've had some sunny days but they usually start with a frost - we had about -4 (Celcius) today. Makes me appreciate the hot summer days when we get them...
