Backyard Flower Patch

The pictures aren't fantastic due to the lighting but you can see the lovely colours of this large lap quilt that I made in 2025 for my workmate, Laura McVicar, on her 30th birthday.

The pattern is 'Morning Flower Patch' by Cheryl Brickey, from here book 'Just Two Charm Packs Quilts', and I used charm packs from my stash of 'Backyard' by Sarah Watts for Ruby Star Society.

I quilted it on my Bernina Q20 longarm with a free motion design based on a panto I had seen online (I don't have a panto device so had to free-hand it).

The quilt measures 54.5" x 67.5".

And Laura adores rabbits, so that was my cue to use this cute teal bunny rabbit print that I've had in my stash too.

Three Wishes

 

Finished in early February after starting it in January to join in with the Moda Love charm pack challenge.

It uses a 'Wishes' by Sweetwater for Moda charm pack and the Moda Love quilt pattern.

It was great to a) make the charm pack version (I had done a layer cake version before), b) use a charm square pack that had been in my stash for a few years, and c) create a small project to use as a ruler work and free motion practice piece on my new Bernina Q20 longarm machine.

The backing is a cute birds print from my stash.

It is 33" square, so ideal for a cot quilt or very small lap quilt.

Pretty Pieces

A baby bassinet quilt to be donated to the local neo-natal unit, made from leftovers of the Pretty Medallion lap quilt that I made in April, using a charm pack of 'Papillon' by 3 Sisters for Moda.

This one measures 18" x 21" and I used the walking foot on my Elna 720 to do simple 'straight' line quilting on the diagonal (probably should have used the ruler foot and a ruler by the looks of these photos!)

The backing is from a flannel sheet that has been in my stash.

Pretty Medallion

 

A small lap quilt that I worked on in the April school holidays (while confined to the sewing room with a mild dose of Covid!) 

The pattern is the Medallion quilt from Cheryl Brickey's 'Just One Charm Pack' pattern book, and measures 39.5" square.

I used a charm pack of Papillon fabrics (by 3 Sisters for Moda)  and a tone-on-tone white/cream print, all from my stash.

I was able to practise free-motion quilting of some different motifs with my Bernina Q20 longarm (so happy!) and when it was all finished I tucked the quilt away until the end of May when it was given as a thank you gift to our wonderful neighbour (and dog-sitter) Janet Pollard when we moved house.

I gave feathers a try in the outer border...

...and did some other motifs in the white areas.

A Little Bit of Sweet

I used the Fat Quarter Shop free pattern ' Mini Charm Chocolates'

This cot quilt version was made with a mini charm pack that I had in my stash - some of the fabrics have a metallic thread running through them for a bit of sparkle.

This quilt measures 29" x 36" and I used some diagonal line quilting in the charm squares, then stretched loops in the sashing, with a simple vine in the border.

The backing is a flannel from my stash.

Sing in the Sun

'Sing in the Sun' is a 41" square lap quilt that I made in November/December of 2019 

as a good luck gift for one of my work-mates who is leaving us as (an awesome) Teacher Aide and heading off to teacher training in 2020.

(Yes, I am wearing a xmas-present headband - this photo was taken in the last week of school)

Belinda Knapp (on the left, me on the right) has such a beautiful, bubbly personality and has been teacher aiding for our school for the past few years. I first met Belinda through playgroup and netball club (our eldest children are the same age) and she has a heart of gold; I am sure she will be a brilliant teacher.

Because of her sunny personality, I thought a charm pack of 'Sing Your Song' by Annie Rowan, that had been in my stash for a few years, would be an ideal match as it has a range of pretty colours and floral or insect-themed prints.

I wanted to make a small lap quilt that Belinda can put over her legs when sitting up late at night doing her assignments, ha ha! The pattern is the same one that I used for the Hi There cot quilt (and when I find out what pattern it is, I will update the post!)

I used a rich blue marbled fabric for the border and a soft blue flannel on the backing, with a lemon yellow pinstripe for the binding... #smashthatstash 

I kept the quilting nice and simple through the centre blocks, just using in the ditch, but for the border I free-motioned some large flowers and echoed around them to fill the space.

The weather down here has been terrible for getting out for photos...it is supposed to be summer but I think since the start of November we've only had a handful of sunny, hot days (good excuse to be inside sewing though!)

Lace and Paper Flowers (Gypsy)

I made this a couple of years ago from a Kate Spain 'Fandango' charm pack 

but have only got around to quilting it this year. 

It is a lap quilt measuring 44" x 46" - I love the colours.

I used the pattern 'Jumping Jack' by Sue Pfau from her book 'Quilts From Sweet Jane' - it is an easy pattern and an effective way to use charm packs.

I machine quilted with free-motioned large and small loops in the sashings 

and freehand straight lines (so some are maybe not quite so straight!)

I have named it 'Lace and Paper Flowers (Gypsy)' because I love listening to Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks, and the designs on this reminded me of the lyrics in their 'Gypsy' song. 

The binding is a light aqua tone-on-tone print and the backing is a very pale mustard print 

- all from my stash! #stashbuster2018

This is one of my goals for the third quarter of the 2018 Finish Along.

In 2019 I gifted it to my sister-in-law Brenda on the occasion of her 60th birthday.
