Honky Tonk Flow

 

This was the large lap quilt I made for auction at our Edendale Bowling Club 'Clash For Cancer' charity tournament, this year in aid of prostate cancer support in Southland.

I used the 'Process Flow' pattern by Cheryl Brickey in her book 'Just Two Charm Pack Quilts' (and the link between 'flow' and prostates was coincidental, but very apt!)

The charm packs had been in my stash for maybe ten years, having been purchased from the Fat Quarter Shop (online) in the USA.  They are 'Honky Tonk' by Eric and Julie Comstock for Moda.

It measures 56" square and was quilted with straight lines (using channel locks) on my Bernina Q20 longarm.

There is quite a cowboy/wild west theme happening in the motifs of the fabrics.

The backing used up some leftover blocks.

Rachael's French General Sampler Quilt

At the start of this year I had the privilege of quilting this 56"x78" twin bed sampler quilt for one of my most long-time friends, Rachael Chalmers (from Dunedin), who gave me free-range to do whatever I liked!

Although I've had my Bernina Q20 longarm since late 2022, I had only re-erected it a couple of months before Christmas (after having moved house in June), so have not completed a lot of projects on it yet.

With this quilt I was able to do a mixture of free-motion quilting and ruler-work, trying out different designs in the different blocks - gosh, I had so much fun!  The blocks are a mix of pieced and appliqued patterns, so it was fun coming up with quilting designs that would enhance those patterns.

Altogether it took about 12 hours of quilting time, and used x6 250m reels of thread (and x7 bobbins).

Cherish EPP quilt progress blocks 1-10

  

While I am on a run with updating my 'scrapbook', I will share the blocks I've created so far in another long-term project: an EPP quilt, 'Cherish', using a pattern, papers and acrylic templates kit that I purchased in late 2020 from Jodi Godfrey of Tales of Cloth in Australia, and started in 2021.

Here are ten of the twenty full-hexagon blocks I've made so far, with some close-ups of the cute drawings in the fabrics:

 

 

I looked for a set of fabrics to inspire me and love the blue and white scheme of  'Teatime' by Lewis and Irene for Moda fabrics - it has cute little drawings of woodland creatures, teapots, cups and cakes, based on the inspiration of blue and white china, so is perfect for fussy-cutting for an EPP quilt.

 

I bought a half-yard bundle from Moda, and supplemented the bundle with other blues and whites from my stash, and introduced some greens and yellows to add interest. It reminds me of a sunny Southland day and being outside for a picnic.

 

I am making the 8" block version, for which there are 20 full hexagons, and I only have the six border half-hexagons to create (one is done so far). The slow-stitching of handwork, and the portability of the pieces, was ideal for me to keep my hands busy while sitting or visiting with my ill mother in the hospital or rest-home during the months before she passed away in 2021.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I haven't been trying to do symmetrical/reflection style fussy-cutting and sewing, but have simply been looking to repeat motifs. Will share the rest of the blocks in the next post.
