Fox in a Twist

 

This cot quilt (measures 37.5" x 44") was a new baby gift for my cousin's new grandson, Jack Burgess, who was born in 2025.

The pattern is 'Jelly Roll Twist', a freebie from the Fat Quarter Shop, though I made it as 8" blocks not 9" as in the pattern.  The fabric was a woodlands themed jellyroll in my stash from Spotlight, and I added some other solids and prints from my stash.

I did an allover stipple on my Bernina Q20 longarm for the quilting, and it has a fox flannel backing.

Lifelong Friends quilt for Margaret

Catching up on over a year's worth of projects! This is from 2024...

This was a Donna Ward 'Summer Encore' BOM mystery quiltalong kit that I bought back in about 2020 but only got around to making it in 2024. 

It measured 51"x61" and used the jellyroll that was part of the kit.

I quilted it with simple horizontal lines, using my Bernina Q20 longarm (with channel locks).

I gifted it to one of my late mum's lifelong friends, from very early in their childhood, Margaret Young.

Megabytes for Meg

A young lady who we have known since she was born, Miss Meg Kenny (nicknamed 'Megabyte' by my hubby when she was a baby) turned 21 in August this year - the lockdown NZ was in at the time meant she couldn't have the 21st celebration that she had planned, and then it has taken me and her mum this long to coordinate ourselves to get my gift delivered to her (all three of us live in different towns).

I used a jelly roll that I had purchased from Donna's Quilt Studio here in NZ and I used Michelle Cain's 'Ridiculously Easy Jelly Roll Quilt' pattern from her Bolt to Beauty website.

And yes, it was a super-easy quilt to put together (I actually made this in February and finished it April, before realising Meg's birthday wasn't until August, so I was well ahead of myself for once!)

For quilting (it measures 57" x 68") I did straight line echos of the coloured strip blocks, and free-motioned simple up and down loops across the white background strips.

The backing is a blue print that has been in my stash for a while too, so it is good to be using some of that up!

Starry Surprise

 This was a Donna Ward mystery quilt that I made in 2020 with a jelly roll kit that was purchased from Donna (she gives a range of colour options for her mystery projects)...I have had it lying on the spare bed and realised the other day that I haven't shared it yet (though I had taken photos of it)!

The twin-size quilt measures 60" x 64" and the backing is a cute woodland creatures print that was in my stash and had the perfect colours.

I used a simple wavy stitch on my sewing machine to quilt across the horizontal lines of the main body of the quilt; and thin side to side lines in the outer sashing/border.

It was nice to be using a dark solid for the background as something different for a change; the binding is an aqua tone-on-tone.

Sweet Wonderful You

 

This is a small lap quilt that I have gifted this week as a baby gift; it measures 44.5" x 45.5".

I created half square triangles from a junior jelly roll of 

Kimberly Kight's 'Smol' fabrics for Ruby Star Society 

- I love the apples on it!

It was nice to use some different colours, especially the blue solid for the background, 

and I chose a pink geometric print for the binding.

To quilt it I used the wavy line setting on my machine, with a walking foot, 

and simply made my way along all the horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines.

The jelly roll HSTs technique was the same as used for three quilts in 2017, 

from the 'To the Point' pattern by Amy Gibson.

The backing is a navy and white print - everything came from my stash.  

Brooke is the third daughter of my teaching colleague Aleisha Schrader.

Brilliant - second quilt finish of 2020

An invitation to my friend Kath's 50th birthday dinner (held last week) meant a frantic scramble through my stash to find the perfect fabrics to create a gift for her. I had about eight days' notice but am on summer holidays (and the weather has been yucky) so was able to get busy putting it together.

This fat quarter pack of Elizabeth Hartman's Rhoda Ruth fabric has been in my stash for a few years from when I was a member of the Moda Modern FQ club for a year; I thought the colours and prints of this set were lots of fun, just like Kath!

 I have had Christa Watson's free Beaded Lanterns pattern in my to-do folder for a while too, and although it is a jelly-roll pattern, I was able to make four lanterns from each fat quarter.  I chose to show up the prints by using a dark charcoal grey solid as the background (which was the only thing I had to buy).

I added an extra column of lanterns to the side of the quilt to make it a wider lap quilt (and have still got about 8 lanterns to use for a smaller second quilt at some stage).

I adore this print with the white leopards!

The prints had a good range of animals, florals and geometrics - can you spot the foxes?

This rich crimson/red has giraffe motifs.

I free-motion quilted this 64" x 75" lap quilt/double quilt as per the suggestions Christa makes in the pattern: echo straight lines and large pebbles/bubbles in the background; zigzag loops down the column of lanterns.

The backing is also pieced from my stash - a really cool landmarks of major cities print and a stripe.

The binding is an aqua tone-on-tone print.

I called the quilt 'Brilliant!' as it is so colourful and vibrant - again, just like Kath!
