It has been on my to-do list to make a Plus quilt...have finally had a go at it,
using a mixture of blues and greens...
It is a lap quilt, measuring 60"x 60" - I loosely followed Jeni Baker's tutorial by using 4.5" squares (finishing size of 4") but instead of cutting five squares per plus I cut a middle strip of 12.5" x 4.5"
I used a chevron minky backing (with a strip of flannel as I was too lazy to try to match the chevrons in an effort to make the minky wide enough for the backing!)
I used a multi-stripe for the binding - it was another chance to try out machine sewing the binding on (as per Rita's tutorial at Red Pepper Quilts) - it is much faster than hand sewing!
And yes, it has been trying to snow for a couple of days...
we're not getting much here but it is making a mess all over Southland/Otago.

Lovely simple quilt, I have quilted one the same for a customer, only in oranges. Fantastic bird photo's! I must see the link for binding.

ReplyDeleteI've also got this quilt on my "must do" list, it always looks great and yours is lovely. That's a good tip to cut one rectangle instead of all squares.
I'm admiring your snow photos - believe it or not we had a light snow flurry in Levin the other day, not enough to settle though, although the Tararua Ranges behind us have a good coating.
Love your bird photos too. We often put a peeled apple out for the native birds, did you know they will also happily tuck into a (squashy) partly peeled mandarin on a stick?
Cool tip Jenny, thank you - will now know what to do with those over-ripe mandarins that turn so quickly in the fruit bowl! Have got some finches visiting today (I've also added a seed dispenser to the tree) and the bellbirds are back write now as I type! Now I just need to get the local tui to call by... I see the East Coast had a good dumping of snow - that will be a big thing for them to cope with! Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteThat's a pretty bird you have there and you got some great photos too. I think this is one of the most popular modern quilt pattern on the web ... I'm thinking of doing it myself. :-) Your quilt is beautiful!!
