Slices of Spring

This is a double-bed or queen-sized quilt that I have made from part of a layer cake of Sundrops by Corey Yoder for Moda, such a pretty range of colours and prints.

The quilt measures 72"square - at 180cm wide it was just a bit of a stretch for Kieran to hold the corners out flat (even though he is now six foot tall himself! Needed another adult but Brian is away today playing bowls for Southland...)

I used a pattern called 'Cake Slices' by Cheryl Brickey of Meadow Mist Designs - I had won two free patterns from joining in with an online linky party (I think that's what it was?) and have managed to make two quilts from the one layer cake (will share the second quilt when it is finished.)

The backing is made from two coral-based prints ( I especially love the glasses print)
and the binding is a gorgeous lime green.

I had made the top in the school holidays in Sept-Oct but wasn't sure how to quilt it.
Then I saw this video by Christa Watson showing how to FMQ her 'cursive Ls'
and knew they would be great for the sashing.
For the blocks I created a six/seven petalled flower that echoes out to the edge of each block.

This quilt is destined for the auction at the Southland Bowls Charity Tournament next weekend that Brian has been invited to take part in. This quilt was also one of my 2018 Finish Along fourth quarter goals.

Linking up with Myra's Finish or Not Friday linky party - and Amanda Jean's Finish It Up Friday linky party - kia ora to everyone!
Here are some southern spring shots to finish with...

2018 FinishAlong Q4 Goals

No doubt I will get distracted by other things but I am aiming to finish these before December:

Four rabbit panel pillows. DONE (actually made two sets!)

Making this thread painting of Bess into a wall hanging.

Quilt this Sundrops lap quilt.

And quilt it's queen-size sister. These two quilts came from one layer cake. DONE!

Get this quilt finished! I think I started it about nine years ago...

Make two more pillows from this Cars fabric. DONE!

A licorice all-sorts themed quilt with these candy colours (plus a few more I'll buy to make it more scrappy, along with the required black and white strips too). DONE and it is gorgeous!!

Fingers crossed!!

Spring Fling wallhanging

This was my entry for the 2018 Aotearoa Quilters 'Pink' Challenge - a 30cm x 30cm wall-hanging inspired by the blossom trees of Spring.

I made the blossoms by stitching together small pieces of pink/white cotton, tulle and satin, then attached them to the pieced background.

I wanted some bits of blue sky to peek through the blossoms.

I didn't win an award (from what I've seen there were dozens of amazing entries - and it was won by the talented Sonya Prychal, whose thread painting workshop I attended last week); the entire collection is now touring around the country.

Lace and Paper Flowers (Gypsy)

I made this a couple of years ago from a Kate Spain 'Fandango' charm pack
but have only got around to quilting it this year.
It is a lap quilt measuring 44" x 46" - I love the colours.

I can't remember the name of the pattern I used, or where I got it from, sorry!
(If anyone recognises it, please let me know!)

I machine quilted with free-motioned large and small loops in the sashings
and freehand straight lines (so some are maybe not quite so straight!)

I have named it 'Lace and Paper Flowers (Gypsy)' because I love listening to Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks, and the designs on this reminded me of the lyrics in their 'Gypsy' song.

The binding is a light aqua tone-on-tone print and the backing is a very pale mustard print
- all from my stash! #stashbuster2018

This is one of my goals for the third quarter of the 2018 Finish Along.

In 2019 I gifted it to my sister-in-law Brenda on the occasion of her 60th birthday.
