It is a (very belated) 13th birthday gift for Jack, the eldest son of one of my best friends, who this year has headed off to boarding school in Dunedin. His mum Rachel gave me colour options of blue and gold (Otago) or red and black (Canterbury). I figured red and black would look more masculine for this design, which I had been wanting to try for ages!
It is a single bed/twin bed quilt, made using Amanda Jean's Easy Chevron pattern - and it certainly was easy. Fabrics are from Spotlight: a red solid and a black with tone-on-tone spots.
Have just quilted with a simple echo lines that follow the shape of the zigzags and then straight lines across the border from the main panel to the binding.
It is backed with a red/white chevron minky and a strip of black minky (all so soft to touch) which is quite heavy so I just used flannel as the batting. The binding is just the same red solid as used for the chevrons on the front.62" x 72" |
This quilt really pops!! Love the black and red together.
ReplyDeleteThanks! It's a strong colour combo to be sure!
DeleteThis looks so cozy. I just want to cuddle up in it. My Minky loving boys would love one this big.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean, Jasmine! I have fallen in love with minky as a backing. Have already bought a blue and white chevron minky to back the next project I have planned!
DeleteThis is a great quilt! I love the quilting and I'm sure Jack will love the minky backing!
ReplyDeleteHe was certainly very happy with it - keeps him warm in his hostel!
DeleteVery manly and will be a great study buddy for cold nights when assignments need work. I'm newish to quilting and I haven't tried different mediums other than cotton or denim so would be interested to know what sewing with "minky" is like. I'm guessing it's that cuddly faux synthetic mink?
ReplyDeleteHi Nicky, the minky surprised me as it was so easy to use (slides around beautifully under the needle!) Yes it is the synthetic minky but it gives the quilt a lovely texture!
